UW-Stout Physics Department Meeting Minutes

Members Present: Mark Larchez (chair), Robert Foley (Recording Secretary) Jo Hopp, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, John Rompala, Alan Scott, and Ellen Carlson

 

The meeting was called to order by M. Larchez at 9:05 a.m.

 

1.       Announcements.

a.       Office help has been scheduled and posted.  Open Laboratory Hours are pending.

b.       The Chancellor will meet with the department next week.

c.       The retention decision for Jo Hopp will be made later in this semester.

d.       In the next year or two, several new hires will be necessary due to retirements.

 

2.       Minutes for meeting of 01/16/07.  The minutes were not yet available and approval was postponed.

3.       Faculty Senate: Report from departmental Faculty Senator Alan Scott:  There had not been a senate meeting since the last report so there was nothing new to report.

4.       Lab Equipment & Procedures:  The students are having some difficulties with laboratory printers.  Jim Pejsa will write a new printing procedure to correct the problem.

5.      Budgets and travel: Purchasing cut off deadline are now available.

6.       Departmental Definition of Research: This Item had been tabled on Dec 15, 2006.  Joe Hopp moved and Alan Scott seconded a motion to remove the item from the table.  Motion passed.  Robert Foley moved approval of the Department Definition of Research and Jo Hopp seconded the motion.  After discussion, Chair Larchez called for the vote.  The motion passed unanimously.

7.       Report of Summary Think TankInterdisciplinary Activities Center (IAC) Proposal:  Discussion continued of the report.  Several department members presented a White Paper detailing concerns over the feasibility of merging science departments.  There was extended discussion. It was suggested that department concerns be discussed with the Chancellor when he meets with the department.

8.       Adjournment:  It was moved to adjourn.  Motion passed.
