Physics Department Meeting

Staff Members Present: Mark Larchez (Chair), Ellen Carlson, Bob Foley, Paul Henkiel, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, John Rompala, and Alan Scott

Guests Present: F. Schultz

 

M. Larchez called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m.

 

1.      Invited Guest: Forrest Schultz updated the department on developments of the Applied Science Program. He commented on the high quality of incoming students, and on the implementation of Biotech and Material Science concentrations.

 

2.      Announcements:

a)      The department has received funding and approval from Dean Murphy and the Arts and Science Council for a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer system. Special thanks were given to B. Foley and E. Carlson for their effort in this matter.

b)      J. Rompala will be spending part of the summer at the Marshall Space Flight Center/University of Alabama-Huntsville continuing his research in describing observed regional lighting current distributions.

c)      L. McCullough has published an article in the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, volume 9.

d)      Dean Murphy will meet with the department on Friday April 16.

 

3.      Previous Minutes: Minutes from the January 14, 2004 department meeting were approved.

 

4.      Faculty Senate: J. Pejsa gave a report on Faculty Senate activities. He reported on a proposed course drop/grading policy, block scheduling for first year students, and pay raises for faculty.

 

5.      Lab Equipment Difficulties: M. Larchez experienced printing problems during lab because fanfold paper had been loaded into a laser printer.

 

6.      Budget:  Supplies & Services: The department prioritized a list of items over $2000 to be submitted to Dean Murphy as special requests. Also the department started planning how to spend its remaining supply funds.
