Physics Department Meeting

Members present: Mark Larchez (chair), Ellen Carlson, Robert Foley, Paul Henkiel, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, Jim Rada, John Rompala, Alan Scott

 

M. Larchez called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m.

 

1.      Announcements:
-Renewal decision of L. McCullough needs to be done by the end of April.
-Teaching evaluations of J. Rada, P. Henkiel, and L. McCullough need to be done by the end of this semester.
-Post-tenure reviews are due next fall for J. Pejsa, R. Foley, and J. Rompala.
-List of accomplishments are due from faculty in April.
-Visiting astronomer, Anita Cochran: have scheduled 12:00 Wed. cheese and crackers get-together outside weather permitting, and 5:00 Wed. dinner.
-Science Olympiad is next Saturday, 4/5. Several dept. members are participating.

2.      Approval of the February 28 meeting minutes was deferred until next meeting.

3.      Faculty Senate report:  Senate representative R. Foley reported on the latest Faculty Senate meeting.

4.      Lab equipment difficulties:  P. Henkiel installed a new hard disk in a lab computer and returned it to service. The instructor's computer in lab 121 has a problem connecting to the network.

5.      AAPT National meeting in Madison this summer; April 6 is deadline for abstract submission.

6.      Supplies and services: approx. $2,000-3,000 remains to be spent. $50 per FTE and $600 for dept. will become available for supplies; forward requests to Ellen by Tuesday 4/8.

7.      Departmental staffing: The department is losing the 1/2 time equipment manager position. The department discussed staffing options for next year.
R. Foley moved and  J. Pejsa seconded the following motion:
The department recommends that the two remaining 1/2 time Academic Staff allocations be combined into one full time position, and that the position be filled for next year on an emergency hire basis.
The motion passed with two abstensions.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 10:10.
