UW-Stout Physics Department Minutes

Present: John Rompala, Jim Pejsa, Alan Scott, Bob Foley, Mark Larchez (department chair), Ellen Carlson, Laura McCullough and Jo Hopp (recording secretary)

 

1.      Announcements

 

a)      The department was reminded that there are several issues (as listed in the minutes) that need to be handled in the spring semester.

b)      Other (if any)

Jo Hopp invited other members of the department to observe her classes.

Mark Larchez informed the department that student evaluations of Jo Hopp’s courses from Fall 2007 will be available shortly in the conference room (103J)

Ellen Carlson will request fall needs next week (week of April 2)

Ellen Carlson requested that the department notify her if there are any concerns with rehiring of the student workers in the department.

The department will acquire a cost-share computer for Paul Henkiel.

 

Minutes for meeting of 2007-03-23:   Laura McCullough made a motion to approve the minutes.  Alan Scott seconded.  The minutes were approved with minor corrections.

 

2. Budget:

            a) S&S: $480.60 remained uncommitted in this category.  Laura McCullough made a request for supplies totaling $286.50.  Alan Scott made a request totaling $66.  The remaining funds would be put towards necessary shipping costs.  Bob Foley made a motion to approve these requests.  Jo Hopp seconded. Motion passed.

            c) Learning to Access: $1498.53 remains uncommitted in this category.  Laura McCullough made a request for supplies totaling $1257.50.  John Rompala made a request to use the remainder of the funds on two types of study guides.  The department approved spending on these items.

            d) Jim Pejsa requested that some additional money be placed towards the student computer (total $1300).  John Rompala was no longer in need of $300 for Summer course and money was reallocated.  John Rompala requested that more graph paper be purchased for lab use.

 

3.      Office space assignment for next year

The department decided by consensus that Jo Hopp would move to Room 103D and Paul Henkiel will occupy Room 103A.  Jo Hopp’s phone number will be switched to 103D.  The move will take place near the time the custodians wax the floors if possible.

 

4.      Faculty Senate: Report (if any) from departmental Faculty Senator Alan Scott

No Report

 

5.      Lab Equipment & Procedures: Any problems?  Any special setup requests for Levi & Casey to be discussed at this time?

Mark Larchez reminded the department that Science Olympiad was this weekend (March 31).  He also reminded the department that with the spring holiday on April 6 and 9, labs for Tuesday, April 10 will need to be communicated to Levi and Casey in advance.

 

6.      other (if any)

Bob Foley reminded the department about the support contract for the GCMS which will need to be dealt with next fall.  Steve Nold is currently using that equipment.  There was some discussion about what to do with that equipment.  No decisions were made at this time.
