UW-Stout Physics Department meeting minutes

Members present: Mark Larchez (chair), Paul Henkiel, Jo Hopp, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, John Rompala, Alan Scott, Ellen Carlson
Meeting was called to order at 9:06 a.m.
1. Announcements: (a) Jo Hopp is submitting a lab mod grant with psychology to get equipment and would like to submit through physics as well. (b) Bob Foley’s research produced some funds for the department. He is making a presentation on October 1st in SW122. (c) Request to use the GCMS from biology and chemistry.
2. Report from Larchez about Thursday’s meeting (Sept 13) with Dean Murphy: Larchez submitted official letter of resignation effective January 17, 2008. There was discussion about hiring and personnel decisions. Dean Murphy will meet with the department on September 21st about department chair election. Dean Murphy and Donna Weber will meet with the department on September 28th about hiring. All search committee members must be present at this meeting.
3. Jarvis SW renovation: Issues need to be addressed.
Storage for the 2.2-m tracks (Jo/Laura will work on this)
Lips/overhangs on tables: No lips, but need overhang
Lab tables with radius needs large radius near storeroom doors
Cabinetry preferences: Go through catalog and mark preference (Laura will tally on September 28th)
Overhead gas and utility in research room: Big room (2 stations gas/vac/air /220v electrical in opposite walls, 1 station electrical 220v in ceiling), mid-size rooms with 1 wall station with gas/vac/air/220v), small rooms with no utilities; plenty of standard 120v electrical in all research rooms
Plenty of 120v electrical in teaching labs between wall and ceiling
Lighting preferences in all rooms: Dimmable in teaching labs; need to meet with a vendor for conference about this (Mark will ask for conference)
Overhead utility height: (Mark will ask for conference)
Compact storage carriages: no divided carriages
Extent of hanging unistrut in each room: (6’ unistrut, 6’ apart, 400 lb load at any point, 1000 lb total on any unit)
4. Hiring: New procedures recommended by Dean Murphy: Do not request letters of recommendation; do not conduct phone interviews. Changes to the position description and advertisement were discussed. The department would like to discuss with Donna Weber the issue of late submissions.
5. Chair election procedures: We need a person to conduct the election. Suggestions were given and agreed upon by consensus. Larchez will ask the candidates if they are willing.
6. Meeting was adjourned at 10:03 a.m.
