Minutes of the UW-Stout Physics Department meeting

Attending:  Bob Foley, Paul Henkiel, Mark Larchez, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, John Rompala, Alan Scott, Ellen Carlson, and Forrest Schultz (guest)

 

The meeting was called to order at 9:05.

 

1.  Applied Science program update – guest Forrest Schultz.  Enrollments are on target for first years (24), sophomores are a bit low (20), juniors (17) and seniors (13) low. The enrollment cap has been lifted for Fall 2005 entrants.  Our 2 new concentrations Biotech and Mat. Sci. are on the books for Fall 2005.  There is an opportunity for a possible collaboration with UWEC about Materials Science.  Talk to Mark or Forrest for further information.

 

2. Announcements

The re-keying of the parts of the building used by Physics should be complete except for exterior door entry. Classroom keys may be picked up at Key Control.

Since the ASK5000 desk has started operation, the Science Wing is open later.  Be aware of the different opening hours and exercise caution with leaving doors open.

 

3. Minutes for meeting of  2004-09-17 were approved.  It was suggested that we begin to work on changing the name of Atomic and Nuclear Physics to Modern Physics.

 

4. Faculty Senate: Small changes were made to the FASLAH.  The Chancellor’s white paper was also discussed.

 

5. Lab Equipment problems: One computer in 115 is crashed.  Bob will work on it with Dennis.

 

6. Spring class offerings: Instructors should check the schedule for errors.

 

7. Travel:  WAPT meeting at Oshkosh Oct. 29-30.  Mark and Alan are planning on attending; others give Ellen decision by Tuesday Oct 5 so she can begin paperwork.  The department will cover registration, meals, lodging, but not mileage for personal vehicles.

 

8. Other:

Journal duplicates will be offered to libraries then recycled.

Sky & Telescope and Scientific American will be renewed.

Alan Scott has been invited to review ESEA grants.
