Physics Department Meeting Minutes - October 7, 2005

Members present: Mark Larchez (chair), Robert Foley (Recording secretary), Jo Hopp, Jim Pejsa, Laura McCullough, John Rompala, Alan Scott

Mark called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m.

 

I. Announcements

1. Promotion applications are due today (Oct 7, 2005). Mark Larchez announced that the department expects one application.

2. Custodian Dave Lee will not be returning to work.  He is retiring.  The department decided to send him a card and/or gift.

3. Access to Leaning fund requests are due early this year, October, 21, 2005.

4. Requests for Access to Learning funds for next year are due early this year, October 21, 2005. 

 

II. Department Minutes

Minutes of the Department Meeting of September 30, 2005 were reviewed.  Several minor typo/spelling corrects were made. Laura McCullough moved approval of the September 30, 2005 minutes and Alan seconded the motion. 

 

III. Faculty Senate Report

 The department’s faculty senator, Alan Scott, reported on the most recent Faculty Senate meeting.  Alan reported: The Chancellor announce several changes to UW-Stout’s Professorship Grants. There was discussion of budget cuts, including several models.  The College of Arts and Science share of the cuts look to be approximately $67,000/year for this budget cycle. It was also announce that UW-Stout will convert from eScholar to Desire to Learn (D2L) on its Website.

 

IV. Laboratory Equipment and Procedures

Laboratories and equipment were discussed.  It was pointed out that Chemistry has a full-time lab maintenance/setup person; Biology has half-time lab maintenance/setup person, and physics as none.  It was suggest that we see if it is possible to use learning access funds to hire a part-time maintenance/setup person.

 

V.  Spring Semester Offerings and Staffing

Mark Larches distributed tentative spring semester course offerings.  There was extended discussion.  Alan Scott will be teaching a second section of Statics and Strength of Materials due to course demand.  A section of Physics 232 will be deleted from the schedule and also possibly a section of Physics 231 due to shifting student course requirements.  As a possible replacement for Laura McCullough who will be half-time in the school of education next semester and for Jo Hopp who will be take so leave time during the second semester, Mark Larchez will look into contacting Paul Henkiel to see if he had an interest in this possible replacement postion.
