UW-Stout Physics Department Meeting Minutes

2007-11-20, Jarvis Hall, SW 103-J

Members present: Mark Larchez (chair), Paul Henkiel, Jo Hopp, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, John Rompala, Alan Scott

This will be a special expedited meeting to work on particular items.

Meeting was called to order at 7a.m.

New Business

Building renovation and construction proceeded to be discussed as a continuation from the meeting on November 19, 2007.

Storage

1. Mark recalled that we previously were interested in making the fixed shelving on the right to be 3 ft deep.  This was agreed upon.

Teaching Laboratories

1. It was asserted that the labs need to have variable lighting levels.  From previous discussions with architects, it was recalled that this was done with two sets of lights.  Two of the labs will have lab tables set at bench height.  These two labs will need stools with backs.  One laboratory will have chairs suitable for desk level work.

2. Teachers work stations should be movable.  It was recalled that any hardwiring would be done next to a wall.  It was agreed that a white board label should be placed on the right side of lab 4.02.  (This may have been an oversight by the architects.)

3. Discussion proceeding to the cabinetry needed along the walls with sinks.  One of the three labs should have vertical storage (floor to ceiling).  The cabinets should be lockable.  The storage cabinetry (without bench-top) should be floor to ceiling with adjustable/removable shelving.  Top cabinetry should be glass.  Alan would sketch a design for the cabinetry.

4. Mark suggested the cabinetry be able to support a heavy load.  (Such as power supplies and oscilloscopes.)  We would need more support than chemistry storage of glassware.  Laura recommended we get a weight load.

Research Area

1. Jim expressed concern for where the wiring for the weather station would go.  It was agreed that wiring should go to the research room along the West bench-top.

Storage Area

1. John asked about the storage of nuclear supplies.  The department agreed that would go into a lockable cabinet in the upper right corner of the storage area.

2. Jo inquired about the space beside the fume canopy.  It was generally agreed to leave this space empty for carts and misc.

3. Discussion shifted to utilities – locations, type, amount.  All teaching laboratories should have light switches by the doors.  Storage area should have 3 switch locations – one for each door.  Paul indicated the teaching laboratories should have motion sensors with disable switch.  (They should also be variable.)

Other

1.  Discussion shifted to outlets with particular attention to overhead outlets.  John suggested the following arrangement (shown below in blue) in the ceiling area for power outlets to the middle area of the room.  Power outlets around the perimeter are expected.

2. Discussion proceeded about the need for data ports.  It was generally agreed that a few data ports on the sides would be good but none from the ceiling.  It is expected that there will be adequate wireless.

Meeting adjourned 7:55 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Alan Scott, recording secretary
