Physics Department Meeting

Staff Members Present: Mark Larchez (Chair), Ellen Carlson, Bob Foley, Paul Henkiel, Laura McCullough, Jim Pejsa, John Rompala

 

Alan Scott missed this meeting because of conflict with a promotion committee meeting.

 

M. Larchez called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m.

 

1.      Previous Minutes: Minutes from the October 18, 2002 department meeting were approved.

 

2.      Faculty Senate: B. Foley gave a report on Faculty Senate activities. He reported on the university’s budget, faculty efficiency, and the promotion process.

 

3.      Applied Science: J. Rompala reported that the biology department has constructed brand new introductory biology courses specifically for applied science students. Also that there are three new concentrations that are presently in the “queue”, Biotechnology, Material Science and Environmental Technology. In addition Forrest Schultz wants each department to update it’s section of the applied science equipment list.

 

4.      Lab Equipment Difficulties: P. Henkiel reported that all the computers in the laboratories are functioning at 100%.

 

5.      Budget: $400 was committed for travel expenses for Prof. Anita Cochrane from the University of Texas who will give a Harlow Shapley Astronomy lecture. This lecture is tentatively scheduled for April 9, 2003.

 

6.      Student Help: Everyone was pleased with our student workers performance. This is in large part due to E. Carlson expert tutorage.

 

7.      Duplicating machine proposal: This topic was discussed.

 

8.      Evaluation of staff: B. Foley, J. Pejsa, and J. Rompala need to be evaluated by the Department Chair in Fall 2003. Academic staff and probationary faculty need to be evaluated every semester. B. Foley will develop an email form for peer evaluation.

 

9.      Summer classes: Summer classes need to have large enrollments.
