Racing cars have many shapes and features. One of these is the addition of a fixed horizontal wing above the back end of the car. This is said to give the car an advantage in a race. What would that advantage be?
The wing is actually like an upside down airplane wing (air foil). It exerts a downward force on the car (which increases with the cars speed) giving the car greater traction and thus greater accelerating and cornering ability. (Some information from The Flying Circus of Physics by Jearl Walker)
