POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Assistant Professor in Physics, Entry Level Tenure-track. Starting Date: August 31, 2009

(possible start date January 12, 2009, if available)

Position Description:

The position responsibilities include:

• Teaching undergraduate, introductory physics and geology courses, including curriculum development and laboratory preparation.
• Providing and helping implement innovative ideas in physics and geology education, including laboratory activities and course development.
• Advising students.
• Using and contributing to UW-Stout’s campus-wide digital environment, including the use of instructional technology.
• Research and scholarly activities in an area of physics, geology or related field.
• Service to the general university community, including faculty governance.
• Contributing to the mission of University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University.

Additionally the faculty member will be expected to contribute to areas of ongoing departmental interest, which presently include:

• Teach in areas related to physics, such as geology, soil mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, meteorology, light and color, modern physics, and astronomy. 
• Design, build and/or maintain laboratory and demonstration equipment.
• Develop and implement innovative course delivery.
• Aid in the implementation of the Applied Science Major with Environmental Science, Materials Science, Biotechnology and Nanoscience concentrations.
• Develop industrial partnerships and direct undergraduate research.
• Seek outside funding for professional activities.

Qualifications:

Required: A Ph.D. in Physics, Physics Education, Geology, Geoscience Education, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related field is required when contract starts. (Ph.D. required by start of contract.)  Evidence of teaching potential.  High level of communications abilities. A strong commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching.  Interest in areas of applied physics or geotechnical engineering would be especially desirable.
